Ways to Support Local Artisans while Planning Your Wedding

Due to the ongoing corona virus pandemic many artisans and craftsmen have lost their job. During lockdown there was absolutely no business but as of now the economy is coming back slowly,  mainly because of the wedding industry. The growth is surely next to nothing as compared to when times were rather normal but good news is expected in the future. But if you are the one- getting married or anyone you know, this blog is going to be very helpful for you.

Here I am going to share some simple tricks through which you can help in bringing back the economy and livelihood of the people as well.

Buy Flowers from a Local Vendor

It is a known fact that artificial flowers are long lasting and trending but the old world charm of real flowers cannot be ignored. Flowers are the essence of all the decoration be it for any celebration like a birthday, wedding or even a funeral. The real scent of flowers can never be replaced by a substitute.

The floriculture industry heavily depends on weddings, so definitely go for real flowers when it comes to the decorations. Also try to stick to the local flowers available in your region as they are cheap and easily available as compared to the imported varieties.

This way you will get to explore the flower bazaaar and can also plan a pre-wedding photo shoot there as you don’t have to do anything when it comes to the background or aesthetics. All you have to do is dress and show-up!

Hand-made bridal wear

If you want to have a meaning or a great story behind your bridal lehenga, it has to be hand-made by local artisans as it will embrace and encourage the local craft of your region.

Textiles, be it from any state become a part of life if you are Indian. And boy! There are gazillions of options to choose from like chikankari, zardozi, gota patti, or dabka to name a few. You can literally choose different forms of work from various states for every outfit. Like a Jamdani saree for your engagement, a chikan kurta for the mehendi, a simple yellow lehenga with mirror-work for haldi and last but not the least a ravishing lehenga with resham work for your big day.

All the craft works are equally beautiful and too good to be forgotten.

Local Bawarchis for the food!

See! I don’t want you to compromise on the quality of any single thing on your wedding; after all it’s the most important day of your life. And choosing the local cooks is definitely not about compromising on the quality of food. Bawarchis (cooks) are no less than chefs who cook in fancy restaurants. In my unsolicited opinion, the former are way better as compared to the latter. But again, it’s up to your taste and preference. Moreover, you can have the best of both worlds. Employ local bawarchis for regional delicacies like most Indian food and you can get the continental or oriental food catered professionally. Even the bakery and confectionary items  can be ordered from a local bakery. Moreover, the bawarchis are way cheaper than many catering companies. So it surely is a win-win situation.

Folk Entertainment

From the Rajasthani folk dances to old- fashioned orchestras of classical music, there is so much India has to offer in terms of entertainment. It may seem weird to include such outdated forms of entertainment in your wedding but they will definitely make it an experiential wedding.  Music and dance work wonders at a destination wedding as they can be a unique experience for your guests and also a mode of cultural exchange.

Even today many folk dances like Bhangra,  a famous dance in Punjab is very common at a wedding or  Garba, the traditional dance of Gujarat is held a night before the Gujarati wedding. So it’s not that hard to incorporate little culture in your wedding as it is  already enjoyed by a lot of people.

It’s always the small things that make a big difference.  weddings are all about those small things and details that make them great. They bring the community together and spread happiness.  So don’t miss the chance of bringing a smile on someone’s face through small yet life changing efforts like planning  that supports local businesses and artisans.
